2020 Summer Reading

Imagine Your Story Header with the dates June 13 through August 7

What is Summer Reading?

Good question! As of 2014, 95% of all public libraries across the United States offer a summer reading program. The program is meant to support literacy and education throughout the summer in a fun way and is tailored to different age groups (early literacy, children, teens and adults). Activities, such as performers, speakers, and even lock-in nights are held at the library. Prizes are won weekly and, at the very end of summer reading, there is a grand prize winner for each age group. However, because of the pandemic, all of our programing this year will be virtual.

What Are the Rules For the Summer Reading Program?

If you have a child who is still being read to by an adult click here to download the form your little one can color in. If you cannot print one out, call the library and we can have one ready for you to pick up. When it's completed, drop it in the bookdrop and Miss Kate will call you when your prize is ready.

For everyone else we have a brief Google form for you to complete for every book you read. Click here to be redirected to the form. You earn one raffle ticket per book. Unlike prior years, there is no limit to how many raffle tickets you can enter per week! Best of all, everyone wins at least one prize! The first Google form you fill out automatically wins you a scoop of ice cream from The Big Scoop at Long Hill!

Additionally, if you are between the ages of 5-11, Miss. Kate will be issuing craft challenges. Check our event calendar and be on the lookout for them! All supplies will be provided by the library and will be available for curbside pick up.

Each raffle ticket is entered into that week's raffle. Whether or not your name gets picked, every raffle ticket you enter will be rolled into the big drawing at the end of summer for the grand prize drawing.

What Are the Weekly Prizes/Grand Prizes?

We are very grateful to The Friends of the West Newbury Library this year for donating all of our prizes and helping support our endeavors.

The first Google form you fill out automatically wins you a scoop of ice cream from The Big Scoop!

Each week we'll be raffling off three, $10 gift cards to local businesses (one gift card per age group). These $10 gift cards are for Jabberwocky Books, Henry Bear's Park, Nunan's, Long Hill Orchard, The Big Scoop at Long Hill Orchard, Lexie's, The West Newbury Pizza Company, or Nick's.

Our Grand Prizes include a Scooter for Children, a Fujifilm Instax Camera for Teens, and a $100 gift card to Nunan's for Adults.

What days are the drawings being held?

Every Monday we will pick a new winner!

Imagine Your Story?

Every year the Collaborative Summer Library Program picks a summer theme. This year's theme, Imagine Your Story, is about fantasy, fairytales, and mythology. However, we encourage you to imagine your own story.
